James Gunn Announced New Supergirl Film Based On Tom King Comic Book Series

DC Studios’ James Gunn announced several films headlining his new DC cinematic universe at Warner Bros. Pictures. Superman: Legacy and The Batman II were amongst the few revealed today, but Gunn also announced a new project featuring another popular Kryptonian.

Supergirl will get the live-action big screen treatment from Gunn and Peter Safran. The film is titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is a beloved comic book series written by Tom King.

The official synopsis from the comic series is as follows:

Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.

Gunn said the following about his take on Supergirl:

Now Superman is a guy sent to Earth and raised by loving parents, where Supergirl in this story, is a character raised on a chunk of Krypton. She watched everybody around her perish in some terrible way, so she’s a much more jaded character.

The last time comic book fans got to see Supergirl on the big screen was in 1984. The Supergirl film was directed by Jeannot Szwarc from a screenplay by David Odell and starred Helen Slater, Faye Dunaway, Hart Bochner, Peter Cook, Mia Farrow, Brenda Vaccaro, Peter O’Toole, and Marc McClure.

There is currently no release date for the upcoming Supergirl film from DC Studios.
