Jon Favreau to produce and write live-action Star Wars series

Disney and Lucasfilm are stacking up on creative talent as of late. Last month we relayed a story that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss would produce and write a new trilogy of films separate from the “Skywalker Saga” after the show ends in 2019. Today, Lucasfilm via Starwars.com has announced Jon Favreau will executive produce and write a live action Star Wars series.

The series will broadcast on what Disney is calling a “direct to consumer platform”. There is no release date for the series, but long talked about streaming service is set to become available sometime in 2019.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said the following about Favreau.

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform. Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

Favreau also commented on joining Star Wars universe as a creative force.

“If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”

Jon is no stranger to Star Wars as he has voiceover work in the clone wars animated tv show from 2011 to 2013 in a limited capacity and a role in Solo: A Star Wars story coming in May. Favreau is currently in production for Disney’s live action remake of The Lion King.
