Julius Avery Set Direct Flash Gordon Remake

News just broke that Overlord director Julius Avery has signed on to helm & write the upcoming remake of the Flash Gordon film for 20th Century Fox. Matthew Vaughn & John Davis are still attached to produce the film.

Flash Gordon is the hero of a space opera adventure comic strip created by & originally drawn by Alex Raymond. First published January 7, 1934, the strip was inspired by, & created to compete with, the already established Buck Rogers adventure strip. The comic strip follows the adventures of Flash Gordon, a polo player & Yale University graduate, and his companions Dale Arden & Dr. Hans Zarkov. The story begins with Earth threatened by a collision with the planet Mongo. Dr. Zarkov invents a rocket ship to fly into space in an attempt to stop the disaster. Half mad, he kidnaps Flash & Dale & they travel to the planet. Landing on the planet, and halting the collision, they come into conflict with Ming the Merciless, Mongo’s evil ruler

The synopsis of the 1980 film is as follows:

Although NASA scientists are claiming the unexpected eclipse and strange “hot hail” are nothing to worry about, Dr. Hans Zarkov (Topol) knows better, and takes football star Flash Gordon (Sam Jones) and travel agent Dale Arden (Melody Anderson) with him into space to rectify things. They land on planet Mongo, where the despot Ming the Merciless (Max von Sydow) is attacking Earth out of pure boredom. With the help of a race of Hawkmen, Flash and the gang struggle to save their home planet.

No release date has been set for the film.
