Moon Knight Episode 4: “The Tomb” Recap & Review

Episode 4 starts with a huge reveal! Osiris’ avatar, Selim, is seen walking through a tomb where he places Khonshu’s ushabti in a vault with several other imprisoned gods. Yes, we get confirmation that other gods were imprisoned by Osiris, which is why the remaining Egyptian gods were absent from the council meeting in episode 3.

After this mysterious & thought-provoking scene, we see Layla is being attacked by some of Harrow’s men, who she disposes of quite quickly. After saving herself & Steve, they pack up & are once again on the move to find Ammit’s tomb. Layla & Steve engage in a somewhat serious conversation that centers on Marc, as Marc tells Steve to hand him control. Steve resists & tells Layla that he & Marc agreed that when Khonshu was finished with him, he would leave for good which upsets Layla. Steve then tells Layla that Marc walked away from her once, so she shouldn’t be worried that he’s gone now. Although Steve is walking a thin line between truth & lies, we are witnessing Steve taking control more & more & we see that he wants to be his own man even if that means he has to take down Harrow on his own.

Layla & Steve finally find Harrow’s camp, but they’re too late as it’s abandoned. Steve & Marc have another back & forth, which reveals that Marc still has deep feelings for Layla Marc even tells Steve that if he touches Layla, he’s going to throw him off a cliff. However, Layla also goes in for a kiss with Steve, but Steve feeling somewhat guilty, decides to initially disrupt but goes back in for it, causing Marc to punch him in the face.

Steve & Layla find their way into Ammit’s tomb & walk into a maze that they discover is in the shape of the Eye of Horus. While moving through the maze, they come across Harrow’s men, who an undead Egyptian priest has slaughtered. Yes, we’re dealing with the undead! The undead priest is putting the body parts into small containers meant for Ammit’s revival. Layla is chased by the undead priest & defeats it by stabbing it in the eye with a flare & pushing it off a cliff. Layla’s character stands out in this episode. After the scuffle with the undead priest, Harrow appears across from Layla & toys around with Layla’s emotions by repeating some words of her father & telling her how her father would be so proud of her. Harrow also mentions that Marc is in so much pain & says that he read Steve/Marc’s scales. Harrow tells Layla that Marc was amongst the mercenaries that killed her father, which hit a sore spot in her heart.

Steve finds the tomb of Alexander The Great & discovers that Ammit’s last avatar was Alexander the Great, which was a cool scene. It is always a pleasure to see them tie in historical figures to the lore they’re building here. Steve finds Ammit’s ushabti inside Alexander’s body & is confronted by Layla about killing her father. Marc swaps in & tells Layla that he didn’t kill her father, but he was there when it happened. Marc’s partner got greedy & killed Layla’s father & everyone else at the dig site. Marc was also shot.

We finally see Harrow confront the Marc persona again, but Harrow shortens their meeting by shooting Marc twice & leaving him for dead. Marc wakes up in a psychiatric hospital that contains people from Marc’s life who he’s interacted with. Marc is taken to a therapist in the hospital who turns out to be Harrow & Marc starts to realize that his Steve persona is from a movie & that everything else, including his Moon Knight persona, isn’t real, at least that’s what is presented to him. Marc eventually escapes Harrow & is chased by the two cops that brought him to Harrow in the first episode. Marc runs into a room & finds Steve in a separate body, trapped in a sarcophagus. They also see a second sarcophagus with someone else trapped inside before being greeted by the Egyptian goddess Taweret, which is a hilarious scene.

This was another fantastic episode that felt heavy but satisfying.

HIGHLIGHTS & FINAL THOUGHTS

  • It was such a treat to see that the other Egyptian gods were sealed away by Osiris.
  • The big reveal of Marc being present at the site where Layla’s father was killed was something that some of us knew, but it was finally confirmed.
  • Harrow killing Marc/Steve was unexpected but was a powerful scene.
  • Who was in that coffin in the hospital? Khonshu? Maybe it’s the variant of Kang, Ramma Tut?
  • That final scene with Steve & Marc screaming when they see Taweret was hilarious.
