First Photos of Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman Released

With 2019 being such a significant year in American history, as the 400 year marker of “Black” Americans being bought over in documented slavery, the biopic based on the charismatic heroine of the Underground Railroad couldn’t come at a better time. Focus Features has released some of its first picture of as Cynthia Erivo, who will be playing the iconic Harriet Tubman, in the biopic Harriet. This story follows the freedom fighter Harriet Tubman on her escape from slavery and subsequent missions to free dozens of slaves through the Underground Railroad in the face of growing pre-Civil War adversity.

The film is directed by Kasi Lemmons (Eve’s Bayou) and co-written by Lemmons and Gregory Allen Howard (Remember the Titans). Harriet was produced by Debra Martin Chase, Daniela Taplin Lundberg, and Gregory Allen Howard. It will also include a star-studded cast of Leslie Odom Jr., Vanessa Bell Calloway, Joe Alwyn and Janelle Monáe, to name a few. The film is set to be released in theatres in 2019.
