It’s been some time since we’ve heard any update from Netflix‘s upcoming historical film ‘The Woman King‘. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news today that Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel, No Time to Die) will be joining Viola Davis & Thuso Mbedu (The Underground Railroad) in the upcoming film!
The Woman King will be helmed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, who most might remember from 2000’s clasic Love & Basketball & from 2020’s The Old Guard.
The Woman King is inspired by true events that took place in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The story follows Nanisca (Davis), general of the all-female military unit, and Nawi (Mbedu), an ambitious recruit, who together fought enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.
Prince-Bythewood said “Lashana is next-level dope. Not just her incredible chops, but who she projects to the world. She embodies these true-life warriors and we are so lucky she is coming to play.”
No release date has been set for the Netflix project.
