Legendary Entertainment announced that it acquired the rights to Takashi Nishiyama’s Street Fighter. This will include films and television rights.
Street Fighter is a fighting game that was developed and published by Capcom in 1987. The franchise has spawned six main series games, numerous spin-offs, and crossovers. Street Fighter also has an anime series, American animated television series that aired from 1995-1997, an animated movie, and a few anime films and OVAs. The first Street Fighter movie was released in 1994 and starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia. Its second film, titled Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, starred Kristin Kreuk as Chun Li, hit theaters in 2009 and bombed at the box office.
This is an interesting acquisition because of Mortal Kombat 2021 remake that is housed under Warner Bros. Pictures. With Mortal Kombat doing well and having a sequel on the way, it would be great to see Legendary approaches Street Fighter on and off the big screen.
