Final Fantasy IX Animated Series Heading Our Way from Cyber Group Studios

When Final Fantasy IX first hit the PlayStation in 2000, fans of the series yearned for an anime series based on the video game. Well, 22 years later, it’s looking like fans will get what they hoped for!

Bruno Danzel d’Aumont, Cyber Group Studio’s Vice President of International Licensing & Marketing, announced that the studio would reveal a Final Fantasy IX animated series at the Licensing Expo in Vegas, which is set to take place from this  Tuesday to Thursday.

The studio signed a co-development deal with Square Enix to produce an animated series for 8-year-olds to 13-year-olds. Cyber Group Studios’ CEO Pierre Sissman stated that he had aimed to have production start in late 2021 or at the beginning of 2022. As of now, no information has been released on how many episodes the Final Fantasy IX animated series will have.

This is not the first time Final Fantasy has crossed over into the animated realm. Anime & animated films from Final Fantasy include Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals (1994), Final Fantasy: Unlimited (2001), Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (2005), Last Order: Final Fantasy VII (2005) & Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV(2016) & Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV (2016).

The story for Final Fantasy IX focuses on a war between nations in a medieval fantasy world called Gaia. Players follow a thief named Zidane Tribal who kidnaps Princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII as part of a ploy by the neighboring nation of Lindblum. He joins Garnet and a growing cast of characters on a quest to take down her mother, Queen Brahne of Alexandria, who started the war.
