Lionsgate’s Highlander Remake Starring Henry Cavil Gets an Update

A few years back, it was announced that Lionsgate was moving forward with a reboot of 1986’s Highlander.  In 2016, News broke that John Wick’s director, Chad Stahelski, would be helming the the movie. Fans looking forward to the reboot have been awaiting updates about the film, but silence from the studio caused some to believe the reboot had been shelved. Well, Lionsgate has revealed that the film is very much still alive. In fact, we’ll be seeing immortals clash on teh big screen again.

Stahelski confirmed that the Highlander reboot will be his next film. This annoucement comes on the heels of the new partnership Lionsgate and Stahelski announced today. Lionsgate will now give Shahelski control over two franchises, which will be John Wick and Highlander.

Joe Drake, the former head of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group said this about the deal with Stahelski:

“This deal expands on the great creative relationship we already have in place on John Wick and extends it to our Highlander franchise. From the outset, Chad has been the creative force defining the world of Wick; as we continue to think about the future for that world, we want Chad, working together with Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road, as our stewards guiding us and strategizing together at every step. This deal makes it official, and we look forward to his steady hand and creative input not just on the film he is making, but other stories that arise from it. He is a true visionary, and we are thrilled to have him in our corner.”

Stahelski added:

“I am pleased to be able to grow my relationship with Lionsgate in this new oversight role for the John Wick universe and its further expansion. John Wick is so close to my heart and to be able to continue shepherding it will be a blast for me. I’m so happy to also be launching another franchise with Highlander, a world that is so rich with engaging stories to be told.”

The 1986 Highlander film follows Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), who is born in the Scottish Highlands in the 16th century. After reviving from a fatal wound, MacLeod is found by swordsman Ramírez (Sean Connery) who explains they and others were born immortal, invincible unless beheaded. Immortals wage a secret war, fighting each other until the last few remaining will meet at the Gathering to fight for the Prize. In 1985, the Gathering is finally happening in New York City and MacLeod must make sure the Prize is not won by his oldest enemy, the murderous Kurgan (Clancy Brown).

No release date has been revealed for the remake.
