Last week, Lionsgate announced that they would be moving forward with a biopic based on the life of the late Michael Jackson. Antoine Fuqua will be directing the film while Graham King, writer behind the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, will pen the script.
Most fans were locked in to see who the studio would choose to play Michael. Names like Bruno Mars were tossed around by fans, but the studio and Jackson’s estate have chosen their Michael. Jaafar Jermaine Jackson, son of Jermaine Jackson, will play his uncle in the film. Jaafar has a single “Got Me Singing,” which he released in 2019. Fuqua made the announcement today on his Instagram page revealing Jaafar in his uncle’s outfit.
The film will follow Michael from his early years before and during his time at Motwon up until his passing in 2009.
Katherine Jackson, mother of Michael Jackson, said this about Jaafar playing Michael:
“Jaafar embodies my son. It’s so wonderful to see him carry on the Jackson legacy of entertainers and performers.”
King said the following:
“I met Jaafar over two years ago and was blown away by the way he organically personifies the spirit and personality of Michael,” said King. “It was something so powerful that even after conducting a worldwide search, it was clear that he is the only person to take on this role. I am beyond thrilled that he has come on board to portray his uncle and cannot wait for the world to see him on the big screen as Michael Jackson.”
Principal photography for Michael starts this year.
