Sony Pictures released the first official trailer for Viola Davis’ The Woman King.
The film will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, from a screenplay she co-wrote with Dana Stevens and a story by Maria Bello. It stars Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and John Boyega. Davis & Bello will also serve as producers on the film.
The film follows General Nanisca of the Dahomey Amazons and Nawi, an ambitious recruit in the Kingdom of Dahomey. It depicts how they “fought enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they have lived for.” The Dahomey Amazons were an all-female military regiment of the Kingdom of Dahomey which existed until 1904.
Davis was the first to be cast member announced in this film in 2018. Davis said the training for her role “started intensely a few months before shooting—four hours a day, five days a week. Weight training, sprinting, martial arts, and weaponry training for the machete.”
The Woman King will hit theaters on September 16, 2022.
