Amid the buzz of what’s getting canceled, Fox drops a trailer for a new show this fall: The Orville. Fox laid out the details earlier in a press release about the 2017 season but this sneak peek premiered today.
“From Emmy Award-winning executive producer and creator Seth MacFarlane (FAMILY GUY, “Ted”) and director Jon Favreau (“The Jungle Book,” “Iron Man”), THE ORVILLE is a live-action, one-hour series set 400 years in the future that follows the adventures of The Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship, as its crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous problems of everyday life. The series stars MacFarlane as the ship’s Commanding Officer and Adrianne Palicki (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Friday Night Lights”) as his ex-wife, who’s assigned as his First Officer.”
We also catch glimpses of other genre actors. Vincent Garber (“Legends of Tomorrow”, “Alias”),Penny Johnson-Jerald (“Castle”,”24″, “Deep Space Nine”), and Brian George (“Big Bang Theory”,”Seinfeld”).
Judging by the alien makeup and the ship, we have some decent production values along with a solid cast. We can already tell from the dialogue this is definitely more Galaxy Quest than Star Trek (not that there was ever any doubt with Seth MacFarlane involved). The jokes are not ground breaking, but it’s still early. Most sci-fi fans will probably watch at least one episode, if only to gauge the answer to the next obvious question.
Will this last longer than Firefly? (Sorry, I know, too soon)
