‘Wise Guys’: Robert De Niro Set to Star in Film About Vito Genovese & Frank Costello for Warner Bros. Discovery

Warner Bros. Discovery is bringing out their big guns with their first film since the acquisition & Robert De Niro is headlining the film.

The Hollywood Reporter announced today that De Niro, Barry Levinson & Nicholas Pileggi will work on a gangster film called Wise Guys. De Niro will star in the movie, Levinson (Rain Man) will direct & Pileggi will write the script. Pileggi is well-known for writing the 1985 Wiseguy book, which is based on Henry Hill’s rise & fall in the Lucchese crime family. The book was later turned into the 1990 film Goodfellas which Martin Scorsese directed.

The film will center on Frank Costello & Vito Genovese, two Italian-American crime bosses who thrived in New York City during the early 20th century. Costello stepped down from being boss in 1957 after an assassination attempt on his life failed & Vito Genovese took over.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources told them that De Niro is set to play both Genovese & Costello, but this has yet to be confirmed. The film currently has no release date.
