Ann Dowd Joins Blumhouse’s ‘The Exorcist’ Remake

It has been confirmed that Ann Dowd will join the cast for the first film in The Exorcist trilogy in development by Blumhouse, Universal, and Morgan Creek productions. Leslie Odom Jr. and Ellen Burstyn will reprise her role as Chris MacNeil from the original film in 1973.

David Gordon Green will direct the film. Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and Green will collaborate for story development. Peter Sattler and Green will write the screenplay. Universal and Peacock obtained the copyrights and new Intellectual Property, with The Excorcist franchise serving as a foundation and Blumhouse and Morgan Creek in partnership.

The first film for the upcoming trilogy will be released on October 13, 2023, in both theaters and Peacock. Jason Blum will serve as a producer through Blumhouse. David Robinson and James Robinson are the producers on behalf of Morgan Creek. Green, McBride, and Cooper Samuelson will serve as executive producers. Ryan Turek will also be on board to oversee the project in the representation of Blumhouse.

The original film was directed by William Friedkin. The film proved successful and the most profitable for its time at the box office. The Exorcist follows a 12-year-old girl possessed by a mysterious entity and the lengths her mother and two Catholic priests went to save her.
