Akira Toriyama, the creator of the beloved manga and anime Dragon Ball and the artist behind such games as Chrono Cross and the Dragon Quest games, has passed away at 68 from acute subdural hematoma.
Toriyama cut his teeth on his first manga, Dr. Slump, where he won the Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen manga in 1981, but it was in 1984 that Toriyama’s most famous creation took not only Japan but the world by storm.
Dragon Ball, the manga series that follows Goku, an alien sent to Earth to destroy it but eventually grew to save it countless times, was aired from 1984 to 1995. It spawned an anime series that ran from 1986 to 1989 and a sequel series, Dragon Ball Z, that aired from 1989 to 1996. Toriyama was helping out with the story for the Dragon Ball Super anime, which launched in 2012 and ended in 2018; however, the manga is ongoing with Toyotarou, the artist behind Dragon Ball Super.
Toriyama was also behind the upcoming Dragon Ball Daima anime, releasing later this year.
